jon rafman lives in montreal, canada, but through google's street view feature his art practice is global. rafman captures images from street view, publishes them on his website and has even installed some large-scale physical reproductions of his findings. there are a number of coinciding themes - breathtaking landscapes, intimate embraces, tragedies such as fires and car accidents, and happenstance moments of whimsy. some critics question the legitimacy of the 'artist', but it seems that the practice and content is an artistic statement in itself. these days, the virtual and the real aren't so easy to separate.

after causing a bit of buzz in Montreal earlier this year, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Catwalk to the Sidewalk makes its way to Dallas. the exhibit boasts over 120 of Gaultier's designs, and we hear visitors are welcomed by a talking mannequin of the designer. worry not - Madonna's ubiquitous cone-bra from her Blonde Ambition tour will also be present. the exhibit opens on November 13 at the DMA.

salon 94's bowery location is screening aïda ruilova's Goner (2010) until october 23, closing out right before the end of america's creepiest month. the 11-minute "psychological thriller" explores the capacity of violence in film. keeping with the conventions of slasher flicks, the viewer witnesses the attack through the eyes of our invisible assailant. the victim (played by sonja kinski) represents manifestations of terror in both mind and body, frantically struggling until dying on her bedroom floor. salon 94 is also showing ruilova's more recent film, Prop House, which similarly addresses constructions in film.

balenciaga's resort 2012 video. an amazing coordination of art direction, styling, and set design. the mix of playful yet sophisticated colors, slightly disfigured silhouettes, and a utilitarian/feminine aesthetic definitely sends out art-school prodigy vibes. these girls look femme, yes, but don't forget that they are also fatale.

a glitch of nature would be the simplest way to summarize dries van noten's spring collection. the master of artful patterns chose to use hyperrealistic digital prints of nighttime cityscapes, barren ocean seas, pastoral vistas and lush tropical jungles. these views were cut into voluminous dresses, creating a sort of pattern-block of images: a modernist treatment of natural subjects.

dries expressed a clever similarity between the hushed lights of a city skyline and the twinkling of jewel embellishments down the panel of a shirt. monochrome matador jackets toned down their wild embellishments, and a circus circus casino marquee graphic added to the gamely feeling of the collection. a tangential grouping of inspirations, yes, but in the hands of dries the outcome is always intellectual and centered.

versus spring 2012

you'd expect sex from Donatella and color from Kane, but the two designers at the helm of Versus refined their respective trademarks this season. sports influences have been everywhere for spring, and this collection took a lighter, more feminine approach to athletics. the palette - mint, pale yellow, light pink, lilac - turned dresses with revealing slits into definite daywear. pleats, backed by black or white, were replicas of cheeleaders' skirts, and a scale print appeared athletically engineered. the few prints in the collection were blurred, adding a feeling of motion.

reinforced water-resistant zippers were borrowed from outdoors attire. aside from the patent strappy heels, there were little marketable accessories. but perhaps the girl Versus is thinking of needs little more than a sporty utilitarian clutch.

flower motifs are sprouting up on many a runway in new york and london. floral is always a strong spring trend, but designers are amplifying the print into fields of floral dresses, dizzying layers of petals and stems, and realistic digital prints. no longer reserved for subtle embellishments, flowers are growing wild across the fabric of spring.

Over-the-top color is proving to be the biggest trend for spring, but David Delfin has always used extreme standout hues in his work. The Madrid-based designer's newest collection includes a (delightfully) nauseating mix of pantone prints, conflicting neons and bright lips. The mix-matched heels and socks are especially cheeky, and the chunky neon zippers are an eye-catching detail. Personal favorites: the television test pattern button front shirt and the nude shorts with pink zipper.

kevin francis gray was born in ireland in 1972 and currently lives and works in london. gray's sculptures combine classical canons and motifs with contemporary attire, posture, and character - after curious inspection, a seemingly virginal form reveals a sinister skull under it's veil. gray's work is expertly detailed and executed, and the artist's materials typically include automotive paint, fiberglass resin, and glass crystal beads.

P.opular S.ky (section ish) by Ryan Trecartin, 2009

kind of hard to describe something so mind-numbingly twitchy and psychedelic. i didn't expect to sit through all 40 minutes, but the film is incredibly hypnotizing - although simultaneously psychotic and vulgar, the viewer can't turn away but instead relates to familiar characters and dialogue, as if watching we are watching a popular sitcom on ketamine. references to the internet, medication, cell phones and credit cards also suggests the perverse characters to be highly caricatured (yet accurate) versions of ourselves. i highly suggest everyone watch this film from start to finish.

P.opular S.ky (section ish) is currently on exhibit in Queer Voice at the Institute of Contemporary Art in philadelphia. Trecartin is represented by Elizabeth Dee in new york.

london fashion week always impresses with designs that are subversively futuristic without being too campy. david koma's collection is a perfect testament that only the brits can cleverly edit both shape and fabric to create a refined yet playful look with an air of futurism. the palette (camel, grey and black) could have been retro if it weren't for the addition of wiry metallic embroidery. materials were sinisterly mixed as well. koma cut flannel and wool (typically conservative fabrics) into body-con dresses with leather panels that narrowed at the side, exposing skin and plunging necklines. defined structure carried the sci-fi trend - think dresses with sharp pyramids set along arms, or jumpers that were cut at tight waistlines which flowed into boxy balloon skirts. my favorite looks may be the zig-zag patterned beige and black dresses that resembled cartoon explosions. the collection reminds me a bit of bruno pieters' spring collection - although it may just be the common color scheme, as koma is much more surreal and geometrically forward with his silhouette. images via nymag

Miranda July: I am concerned about that but there’s nothing I can really do. I try to push myself towards symbolism, partly for that reason but also that it is liberating. I often write a little reminder that says ‘move in symbols’ so I don’t get too autobiographical. Nonetheless, everything that I can think of that will be coming out in the next couple of years, I feel like I’m throwing myself to the lions. I really could just cry about it, that’s how upsetting it is to me, but I don’t know what to do. Oh well. Everything has its problems.

dazed is featuring an interview with writer/performer/artist/director/all-in-one-creative-machine Miranda July. some may discredit her work as too abstract and her for frequently recycling old themes but i love her consistent style and raw, emotional and sometimes bizarre self-expression. in any case, both me and you and everyone we know and no one belongs here more than you are worth a viewing/read to form your own opinion on the los angeles based artist. rad hourani's fall 2010 show is characteristically all-black, sharply tailored and very androgynous. the bondage trend is present, but a bit more tame and wearable than in other collections. a nice addition to his signature design is the use of patent leather - in jackets, shorts and embroidery - although, the shoes are better with matte detailing. texture is the name of the game, as hourani's collection features fur, leather, spandex, wool and a few heavy-knit pieces. overall i'm not shocked by any of the looks, but then again, rad is likely building on his talents towards a more focused identity.
